There has been a lot of media attention about the recent swine flu outbreak. As people with addictions tend to have compromised immune systems to some extent (and obviously to a greater extent if you are homeless, live with a chronic condition such as HIV, hepatitis or cancer, are subject to stress, or have a poor diet), you should take extra care to keep yourself healthy from this and other infections. In summary, the main ways to stay healthy are:
- Good hygiene, especially hand-washing.
- Stay home, and keep your children home if you or they are ill.
- Cover your nose and mouth if you cough or sneeze.
- Avoid people who are ill.
- Eat regularly, including fruit and vegetables.
- Get enough rest.
- See your family doctor immediately if you get ill, rather than waiting to see if you get better.
